Taking out that rock--

If you’re on the march and need to get something out of your boot in a hurry, there is a method used by some GI’s. Unbuckle the bottom strap on your boot:

Unlace the bottom three hooks:

ROLL, do not pull, but roll the legging upward and off of your service shoe, until it clears:

Your boot should now be exposed and ready to remove:

You may now untie your boot and change socks. Unless you cheated, and tucked your trousers into your socks when donning the legging:

Reverse the process to put the boot back on. This is also a good way to dry your feet when spending time in a fox hole, but there is always the danger of unexpected attack. Regardless, removing one’s boots in a combat zone is always tempting fate.
